  FAQs

How long has ACI been in the asphalt contracting business?
ACI has been serving our valued customers since 1993.

What type of asphalt projects does ACI do?
ACI provides pavement solutions for all types of properties: Commercial, Industrial, Municipal, Churches, Townhomes, Condominiums and Apartments.

What type of asphalt services does ACI offer?
We are a full service asphalt installation and maintenance company. ACI has the staff and state of the art equipment to offer a complete line of services: paving, grading, milling, excavating, patching, crack sealing, asphalt emulsion sealcoating, Liquid Road-MN surface treatment and consulting services.

When does the asphalt season start and stop?
Generally the asphalt season lasts from late April to mid-November. During the off-season ACI offers emergency pothole repairs with cold patch asphalt.

How late can you sealcoat?
Generally the sealcoating season lasts from early May until early October.

What causes a pothole in asphalt?
The main reason potholes form is water works its way beneath the pavement surface (this is one reason you need to make sure to crack seal and sealcoat your pavement on a regular basis). Water generally enters into the pavement base or sub-base through cracks-even small cracks. The water moistens and weakens the material beneath the surface, and this material, because it is structurally weaker, can shift when traffic drives over the surface.

That's bad enough. But the wet base or sub-base has an even greater effect on the pavement as the temperature changes. As we all know from basic high school science experiments, water expands when it freezes. So this wet material expands slightly as the temperature drops, pushing up the asphalt surface. Then, when the temperature goes up, the base thaws and contracts, leaving a small air pocket just beneath the asphalt. This is known as a freeze-thaw cycle and the more freeze-thaw cycles that occur during a winter, the larger the pocket beneath the asphalt pavement. Eventually, traffic driving over the pavement will crumble the asphalt into the pocket, creating a slight depression, and you have the beginnings of a very damaging pothole.

How long does it take sealcoat to dry?
Generally asphalt emulsion sealcoat is dry and ready for use 12-24 hours after application. The dry time is dependant upon on heat, humidity, shade and cloud cover.

When can I drive or park on the new asphalt?
This depends on project specific circumstances such as; the type of project, asphalt thickness, weather and vehicle use. It is best to discuss when your specific project will be ready for use with your ACI project manager.

What is Liquid Road-MN?
Liquid Road-MN is more than a seal coat product. Liquid Road-MN is a high performance mineral and fiber reinforced asphalt emulsion blended with polymers for superior adhesion, flexibility and durability. Liquid Road-MN replenishes the pavement binder that is lost through oxidation and weathering while providing a slip-resistant durable surface treatment. Liquid Road is specifically designed with small aggregate to provide an additional wear coarse surface to the existing asphalt. Liquid Road-MN is ideal for parking lots, roadways & paths. Liquid Road-MN produces an even textured surface with no loose stones or particles, making it ideal for vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic.
